What one ton of CO2 looks like

What one ton of CO2 looks like

It’s become an annual tradition for us now to sit down at year’s end, calculate how much carbon we use from daily activities, then partner up with Carbonfund to offset those emissions. Many people don’t realize that just about every action we do has carbon implications where emissions go into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.  This includes everything from daily commutes, to turning on the computer, to transporting packages.  As a committed green business, Re:modern donates money every year to offset what we generate, and more!

For 2012, we’ve contributed enough to offset 36 metric tons of CO2 emissions that would otherwise have gone into the atmosphere. How much is 36 metric tons of carbon dioxide, you ask? Well, this model (see photo) by a science teacher and his students at Cohasset High School measures 27′ x 27′ x 27′ and demonstrates just one metric ton of C02. That’s a lot of carbon!

Annual Carbon Offset Ritual

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

It’s nearing the year’s end, and one of our annual traditions is to sit down, estimate carbon emissions for the coming year (nerdy, I know), and make a contribution to offset those CO2 emissions.  We’ve been contributing through CarbonFund for a number of years now because they’ve got the resources to help individuals and small businesses like ours to make a difference in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.  It’s really simple and their website even has a carbon calculator for individuals and businesses.  We rounded up quite a lot from our usage this year and contributed enough to offset 35 metric tons of C02 emissions for the coming  year – that should be more than enough for our day-to-day operations, shipping, and some to spare for you.  :)

A New Green Office

Post-consumer recycled plastic

Post-consumer recycled plastic

Immediately on the tail of our busiest season of the year, we packed up the Re:modern office and moved our headquarters from Burlingame to San Carlos, California. We’re enjoying the new digs (which we’ll share photos of once we’re fully unpacked and settled in) and working hard to keep the transition as seemless as possible for our customers.

Setting up a new green office is very different now than 6 years ago when our company first began. Back then, sustainable options were few and the choices seemed to be more about selecting products that created less harm. This time around, we were pleasantly surprised to see some major, conventional retailers offer up office necessities with a greener twist.
Office Depot, for example, now carries scissors whose handles are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. And our friends at Carbonfund just told us about a carbon-neutral paper shredder by GoECOlife. This certified CarbonFree shredder is actually going to be available to the masses through Costco. As a CarbonFree partner, Re:modern currently offsets carbon emissions generated from our everyday business practices (read more here). We’re happy to see that green is slowly, but finally moving towards the norm.

35 Tons of carbon offsets

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Every year, our company makes a donation to offset all the greenhouse gas emissions that may have been produced from our everyday business practices.  And then we round up.  This year, Re:modern is offsetting 35 tons of CO2!

We team up with Carbonfund, a non-profit organization that offsets carbon through global climate-friendly projects including renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reforestation.  It’s a great way for a small business like ours to make a global impact.
